WELSH WHITELEY ARCHITECTS
UAS KETCHIKAN REGIONAL MARITIME & CAREER CENTER
This center provides industry-specific training for the maritime trades. Comprised of two buildings, one 55+ years old and the other 30 years old. Together, the buildings offer roughly 20,000 sq ft of classroom, administrative and shop type spaces. Three primary maritime programs are located within the center and include Welding, Power Technology and Multi-Skilled Worker and Marine Transportation.
Phased renovations of the occupied facilities occurred over a 2-year period. A Code and Conditions Survey was performed to determine what could be salvaged, repairs needed and major renovations needed. Acoustics within the spaces were not conducive to classroom instruction and multiple building systems were original and required complete replacement, which provided opportunities to increase the energy efficiency of the buildings.
