KETCHIKAN PUBLIC LIBRARY

Bettisworth Welsh Whiteley, LLC designed this 16,250 sq ft single-story library building.  The building’s use of wood, steel, and stone is intended to reflect Ketchikan’s rustic, simple structure and construction practices.

The conceptual floor plan is organized to optimize operational, functional and spatial efficiencies on a single floor, and enable easy and clear way-finding for patrons and visitors. This building has the distinction of having a wood pellet boiler, which has the capacity to provide primary heating.

The exterior is comprised of energy-efficient insulated vision glass in thermally broken frames to maximize views and minimize solar heat gain, as well as other durable, long-lasting, easy to maintain, sustainable, natural materials that complement the surrounding setting.

The project was awarded with a 2013 AIA Alaska Honor Award.
